On June 24, 1990 Lynn, Steve, and I drove in the Mothership up the coast to search for Steve’s ancestral lands, around Stewart’s Point and Fort Ross, where the Kashiya Pomo tribe lived (some married and left with Russians) in the 1800’s.
We found the site of Haupt Ranch where his mother Elsie was born, and where the family portrait was taken in 1924. Steve’s mother is the little blond girl on her mother’s lap on the far right. The cemetery still has many old stones from his German Great Great Grandfather Charles Haupt on through the early 1900’s.
The old schoolhouse where Elsie went as a child is still standing just south of Stewart’s Point.

My husband is a direct descendant of Charles Haupt. He was given away at birth and found his ancestry just recently. Our children would like to visit the Haupt cemetery. Could you tell us the address and directions? Also, do you know connections so they could learn their native Pomo language?
Louis Haupt is my great grandfather. Is there a list of names for the photo? My grandmother Agnes Haupt would have been 2 at the time.
That may be Louis on the far left, and maybe Agnes on his lap. Then his wife? your great grandmother? Maybe Julia, the matriarch. Next is Loretta, who I knew as Aunt Bobbie, Alfred and i thought, Melvin, but he died in 1918 (not sure which is which), and there is a little boy nearly invisible behind Elsie’s mother, who died young. Elsie is on her lap, John Engstrom at the far right. I wrote down a list of names I got from Elsie, Steve’s mother–but I am unable to find it. Her maiden name was Engstrom.
I just put up a post showing photos of the gravestones from our second visit in 1991 or 2. much info was lost on my old PC.
Monday 4/6/21 is the 8th anniversary of Steve’s demise.
Sorry I can’t find the comment I left before. Looking at the photos of the grave stones, I realize some of my info is wrong. I said Mary- that was Julia. I believe Elsie’s mother’s name was Bess.
